Creating a Healing Sanctuary

I am so thrilled to announce that Shamanic Soul Center is in the process of creating a sacred healing sanctuary in Julian, CA! I had the great blessing of getting a beautiful four and a half acre property in December and have been dreaming and visioning possibilities for creating a sacred space for healing retreats, ceremonies, and community gatherings.

The space was blessed by 50 friends and community members during a celebratory gathering in January. I've been living here full time since April and am in the early stages of developing the healing sanctuary.

So far, we have set up a simple but powerful medicine wheel that is a traditional sacred space for prayers and blessings. We've started clearing rough walking paths on the land and have a three phase plan to bring the full vision of the healing retreat space to life.

With the encouragement/help of a few key individuals, I started this fundraiser in support of Phase 1. We’re looking to raise $45,000 in the coming year to create healing walking paths, a meditation labyrinth, an in-ground sacred fire circle, and a ceremonial yurt.

I hope you will join us in helping bring this dream into reality. You can find all the details of the plan and fundraiser below. To thank you for supporting the growing vision of our healing sanctuary, Ayni Anand, I’ve put together some Gratitude Gifts, which you can scroll down to view.

Ceremonial Yurt

The largest portion of Phase 1 will be the Yurt. In many indigenous traditions, ceremonies for healing, blessing, and celebration are held in round structures. For example, the first shamanic ceremony I took part in back in 2010 with a Dine (Navajo) healer took place in a round earthen structure called a hogan. He explained that the hogan represented the womb of the mother, and once you came out of it after ceremony, you had received a powerful cleansing and were reborn.

When I go to study with Shibipo shamans in Peru, all the ceremonies are performed in a round structure called a maloka. The yurt comes from traditional Mongolian dwellings, called ger, meaning home. (Interestingly, the words shamanism also comes from that part of the world from the word saman, meaning “one who knows.”) When we engage is deep healing work, we are really coming home to our essence, our soul. The circle often is seen to represent wholeness, original perfection, timeless cycles, and connection with the earth, sun, moon, and other aspects of the natural world. A round structure serves as a powerful and supportive container for ceremony and healing.

Labyrinth

This is an example of a Labyrinth. It is an ancient symbol also relating to wholeness and is a tool for meditation and prayer.

As an individual walks to the center and then back out again, it is seen as a journey to one’s own center and then back out into the world.

Sacred Fire Circle

Sacred fire circles have been used in healing ceremonies for eons. When I go on my pilgrimage to the sacred lands of the Huichol people in Mexico, we do an all-night outdoor ceremony standing in a circle around the sacred fire. Tatewari is the sacred fire spirit, a powerful ally for healing and prayer. Given the fire risk in these areas, it will be important to create a safe in-ground or fortified above ground fire pit.

Walking Paths

We’ve already started clearing some walking paths throughout the property. The Japanese have a form of therapy called Shinrin-Yoku, meaning Forest Bathing. Creating safe walking paths with meditation nooks will be an important way for people to enjoy the healing benefits of nature.

How You Can Help

I would be so grateful and thrilled if you would support this vision. It's been very clear to me how important it is to reach out to my tribe to help co-create this healing sanctuary. Having all our energies, prayers, blessings, and donations makes the energy of the sanctuary a beautiful, collective co-creation.

Our Goal: 45K in 1 Year

Our base goal is $25K by the Autumn Equinox to purchase the Yurt. And our stretch goal for the year is a total of $45K for all elements of Phase 1.

Phase 1 total: $45,000
- $25,000 Ceremonial Yurt
- $5,000 Yurt Deck and Construction
- $7,000 Forest Bathing Walking Paths
- $5,000 Meditation Labyrinth
